Justin Minor Holland “The Guitar” in Brainard’s Musical World 1887-1888

A few years ago I found 14 pages of lined paper with articles pasted on them in a folder titled “Clippings Justin Holland 1887” in the Bickford Collection at California State University Northridge. The articles were titled “The Guitar” and included interesting topics on Sor, Carulli, Carcassi, Molino and answers to reader letters. A typescript also in this folder contains transcriptions of some of these articles and articles from other guitar journals. Based on these two items I was able to track down these articles to Brainard’s Musical World January – December 1888.

A. T. Huerta Life and Works: new research

With the book “A. T. Huerta Life and Works” I wrote with Javier Suárez-Pajares in 2006 out of print (digital edition still available) and no current plans for a second edition, I will post information here about new music and information that has been discovered about Huerta.

A. T. Huerta plagiarizing Sor

After the publication of the book “A. T. Huerta Life and Works” in 2006 by Javier Suárez-Pajares and myself, we continued researching Huerta references and music. Recently I discovered an edition in Harvard Library with an unusual twist.

Below are translations from the Japan Mandolin Union bulletins in 1990 and 1991 detailing the depositing of the Takei Music Library in the Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo, Japan. Please see my earlier articles on Morishige Takei, an incomplete listing of the contents while it was held by others, and some additional details I learned from Kunitachi librarians.

Luigi Castellacci works

Below is the current state of my research on the works for guitar by Luigi Castellacci (1797-1845). It is still very rough with a number of duplicated opus numbers. Any rows without a library location have been found via printed references either in journals, newspapers or publishers’ lists. Any rows with only opus numbers have not been found or perhaps might be music for harp which I have not researched yet.
